defrag causing problems?

I have a pc running XP home. Over the last few months it
seemed to have slowed. So I ran an online virus scan, a
disk cleanup and a defrag.

The scan showed that the computer was infected (with
Gibe.C worm) but that it successfully cleaned it.

Since then I have lost Czech and German language
facilities that I had on the machine and also I cannot
use restore.

Can anyone shed any light on this? I dont see how the
defrag could have caused this - could it?

But then I dont think the virus could either. Its a mass
mailing worm - albeit one that changes registry settings -
as I understand it. And in any case the problem has
occurred apparently after it was deleted?

Thanks in advance for any help.

"Can anyone shed any light on this?"

Sure. You don't have antivirus software - or don't know how to use what you
have - so your computer is wide open to attack.

Do you think that viruses were designed to be removed easily, without
causing any problems to your system?

I doubt that Disk Defragmenter has done anything to cause you problems.

You could select Start, Run, enter "sfc /scannow" without quotes and click on OK.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.asp?scid=kb;EN-US;310747

Then download Adaware and / or update Reference file from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/
and use it to remove parasites.

How good is your housekeeping?

1. In Outlook Express empty your Deleted Items folder.

2. In Outlook Express run File, Folder, Compact All whilst OFFLINE.

3. Run Disk Cleanup. Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Cleanup.

4. Empty Recycle Bin.

5. Run Disk Defragmenter.
