Ouch! Please don't yell at us. We can hear you if type normally, in
mixed case.

Exactly what does "WON'T RUN" mean? What happens when you try? If you
get error messages, please quote them verbatim.

Use upper case often because I am visually impaired...
Thanx much to those who replied....appreciated...

they open, but don't start; think snap-in for DF is missing; don't know how
to get it or this either......Sfc/Scannow is missing...

What is the error message when you try to run defrag or chkdsk?

First try to solve the chkdsk problem. Are you using the right syntax
for chkdsk? Instructions for running chkdsk are here
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265
Try running chkdsk with the /r switch.

For defrag, I suggest you try Diskeeper which is excellent if the
windows defragger is broken. Diskeeper 2009 is the current edition, and
you can download free evaluation versions from http://www.diskeeper.com
which work for 30 days.

JEAN:
It really would be helpful if you would provide add'l details of your
problem and situation so that we could (hopefully) get a precise idea of
what exactly is happening here...

1. First of all, what kind of a system are you working with? An OEM (Dell,
HP, eMachines, etc.)?
2. Desktop or laptop? Know the model # of your machine?
3. What kind, if any, of an XP operating system (OP) installation CD do you
have? Full retail version? Or a non-branded OEM version? Or is there only a
"Restore or Recovery" CD available to you that came with the machine? Or
perhaps there's a partition on the machine's hard drive (HDD) that contains
the restore (or recovery) program (installed by the manufacturer of the PC)?
3. Aside from the chkdsk & defrag issues, what other problems (if any) are
you having with the system?
4. Does it boot without incident and properly function (excepting the
problem areas you've mentioned)?
5. Were there any specific reason(s) why you were attempting to run those
two utilities? Was it to possibly correct some problem you were having or
was this general "housekeeping"?
6. Everything looks OK in Device Manager & Disk Management?

So if you want to pursue further, let's begin with the above for starters...
Anna

Just a thought, Jean, did you leave a space in "sfc /scannow" when in "run";
i.e., after the "c" in "sfc" as I have typed it here? You could have missed
that.

I understand your problem as I am 81 and those so concerned with their
computer etiquette should be more understanding. We're not "shouting"--we're
just visually impaired so give us a chance! Blessings.
