Hello,
I am running Win2K servers with Exchange and W2k3 Servers with SQL, can
these drives be defraged and should they be?

Thanks in advance

I would strongly recommend to defrag any drive AT LEAST once a month. I
personally do all of my home computers once a week. Unless you buy expensive
software, you have to manually defrag each drive, one at a time, using the
defragmenting mmc. defragging never hurts, as long as you do it when the
computers are not in use.

If you really want to defrag the drive - you can - BUT
- Do a full online backup
- Stop all exchange services (put them on disabled state)
- Defrag drive
Never defrag a drive which has online exchange databases or transaction
logs.
These are only exchange considerations - you shoud get clarifications on AD
and SQL issues seperately
(A system state backup before derag would be a must - better safe than
sorry)

Try Diskeeper from Executive Software. They have an on-line defrag tool for
servers which will gradually defragment the drive during periods of low use.
It can take a while for the drive to get cleaned up, but you don't have to
take the server out of use.

Ps a little overkill on the multi-group

You missed the alt.worship.bambi newsgroup...

An addition to this is that there are products such as Raxco's that
will defrag the Exchange stores online.

"Stop all exchange services (put them on disabled state)"

It is NOT necessary to stop Exchange services in order to defragment.
Microsoft's defrag APIs fully support defragmenting without first having to
stop Exchange or SQL services.

"Never defrag a drive which has online exchange databases or transaction
logs."

This also is incorrect. Microsoft's defrag APIs fully support defragmenting
drives with these files on them.
