My new Dell computer bogs down after a couple days of heavy surfing, photos and MS applications. A friend recently "defragged" my hard drive and performance improved. Also, I get a "virtual memory too low" to run apps message a lot and my explorer crashes with and error message quite often. This box is 6 months old with all the bells and whistles from Dell and running XP. Any suggestions what to do or where to go? I am overly technical so any explanations in lamens terms would be nice. Thank You!

did you try and call Dell....oh, take some blood pressure medication before
attempting to have them help you...

I'd lay even money you have bare minimum 256mb RAM. It ain't enough for XP
when running photo-type applications !. Memory's cheap - stick another 512
mb RAM chip in (make sure it's in slot 1) - that will alleviate your
problems.

If after a couple of days of heavy surfing your pc slows down, before defragging try emptying your recycle bin and your temp folders. If you are having virtual memory problems that is because your hard drive is probably near 80% capacity. Your os uses drive space for additional memory. Try removing files you don't need and if you have a lot of photos, copy them to a cd or get an external hard drive for storage. If you do a lot of photo stuff and have a drive under 80gigs, you'll fill it fast. Delete, offload, empty, and then defrag again. The other post is right on about memory too. With only 256 you'll also bog down.
