I don't know what system you may be using but I have had
similar problems with MAS. I found repair hints which I
followed to the letter and I still had the problem. No
solutions found, very frustrating. Then I remembered
something!! On my antivirus program, removing spyware, I
had to turn off system restore as it kept the virus and
replaced it everytime I removed it. I have just turned
off System Restore in Windows XP Home Sp2 and MAS works
fine.

Hope this helps you,
Grumpy

Well, I have the same problem updating since definition
5729 - is stuck on 5727. My system restore is
always "Off", plus on my three other PCs WAP was stuck
only on 5729-5731, then was updated to 5733, 5735 with no
problems. Only one of Four PC is stuck on 5729, I have
Northon on that one, may be this has something to do ???
(On my other PCs I hawe another non-Northon Anti-Virus &
Firewalls)
?????????????????????????????

If you are running a build version of MSAS Beta 1 earlier than 1.0.614, then
download the latest build of MSAS Beta 1 by following the links from
http://www.microsoft.com/spyware/ and installing it.

Then see the post "Definition update recycling - Permanent Fix" in the group
"microsoft.private.security.spyware.announcements" and follow the steps
there to see if you need to update the file gcUnCompress.dll.

Then in control panel Internet Options, empty your Temporary Internet Files,
selecting "Delete all offline content" on the way.

Only then try to update the MSAS definitions.

If it still does not update correctly and permanently, then check the end of
the file errors.log in the folder C:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\ to
see if there any error messages dating from the time of the update. If
there are error messages there relating to the time of attempted update,
then just keep trying, about once per day. Eventually it will come right.

Please let's not all turn off System Restore. This is dangerous.

Follow Robin Walker's advice and lets see if we can get this fixed without
leaving a lot of machines without a safety net.

Me bad, sorry I wasn,t more clear. Turn off System
Restore while repairing problem, check if problem is
resolved as in other posts, then turn it back on.
Obvious ain't it?

So sorry,

Well - my own preference is to fix the problem first, get the machine clean
and stable, and then blow away the restore points and set a new clean one.

I have yet to hear of a single instance where malware magically reappeared
from SR storage, without the user initiating a restore from an infected
restore point.

I have exactly the same problem, and I have read the same
complaint from others on this forum. Deleting and re-
installing the Antispyware software made no difference.
This is a real irritant as it appears the update doesn't
actually get saved and you can never be sure whether the
definitions are up to date.

I have version 1.0.615 and I keep going in loop of Def.
not being updated, evn though it looks like they are. I
did the 'fix' posted for .614 for gcUncompress.dll,
doesn't fix it for this version. Are there manual
uninstall instructions posted anywhere, so I can have a
true clean install?

Alicia

Hello Alicia,

uninstall, Delete MSAS folder and
delete in C:\windows\system32 the following files:
GCCollection.dll
hashlib.dll
gcUnCompress.dll

run a regceaner (Ccleaner)

http://www.ccleaner.com/ccdownload.asp

Also use the temp cleaner of Ccleaner.

Do a fresh install with version .615 (latest)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...A2-6A57-4C57-A8BD-DBF62EDA9671&displaylang=en

Working this way you know that you are really running .615 with all old
things not anymore on the system!!

Hi Tom,

Thanks for the info. I had run my Reg supreme pro and
deleted my msas folder, recycle bin etc. Never thought to
look in system32. Da.... having a moment I guess. I'll
make sure I delete contents of my temp folders, including
the one in local settings for user.

Off to give it a whirl. 8-)

Now that the new definitions are out, I'm stuck in the
same loop I was before I uninstalled and reinstalled, and
deleted some left behind Dlls etc. :-(
