I am a home user using XP Pro. When I try to download the update via MS
Update of the update feature I get the following message "Wendows Defender
was unable to completethe update xxxxxxxx . The wrong diskette is in the
drive. Insert %2 (Volume Serial Number %3) into drive %1.

This may be the same advice as Engel has posted, but here's what I believe
Steve Dodson recommended to another user with this same symptom:

1) Uninstall WD thru Add and Remove Programs

2) Launch cmd prompt

3) MsiExec.exe /x {A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C}

4) Delete all contents of Directory of C:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Definition Updates

5) Reinstall WD

Thank you SO MUCH, Bill! I've been fighting this for a few days now, and
didn't have time to check the NG's.

I'd love to have confirmation if that fixes the symptom cited in this thread
for you.

Hi

This has not fixed the issue for me, specifically on one w2k machine getting
updates from WSUS

I see in the event log:

Product: Windows Defender Signatures -- Error 1321.The Installer has
insufficient privileges to modify the file C:\WINNT\Temp\mpasbase.vdm.

and
Product: Windows Defender Signatures - Update
'{6F5A8068-1569-4ED2-9E0C-E014CB39B53F}' could not be installed. Error code
1603

I will look into this more when I have time

Thanks! - now to see if I can, in fact, remember to put the two data items
together and continue to give correct advice!

Glad to hear it. Many thanks to the developers who managed to get
sufficient information into that log error record that it was useful!
