Mirrored volumes are fault tolerant and use RAID-1, which provides
redundancy by creating two identical copies of a volume. A broken mirror
means that one of the volumes has failed.
A shadow drive or what you refer to as a "shadow of a broken mirror" is the
one of the drives in a mirror set.
