Everytime i select a video file to be opened with MM2 it automatically build a collection file. How are these collections used by MM2(in non-technical terms) Are they something that I can delete or would this delete my original video file? Are these just copies?

The collections are the only way for your files (video clips, pictures,
music) to get into your movie projects.... that's where they have to go
first, as you import the source files.

Yes, importing video files automatically open a new collection and go in
there..... pictures and music don't need a new collection. That's just the
way it works.

From the collection, you move the clips into your movie projects - to the
timeline or storyboard. Once there, you don't need the collection
anymore.... it was just a stepping stone to get the clips into the project.

The collections do not contain your original video files and can be deleted
if you are finished.... but the movie project file still needs the video
files... if you move or delete the video files before you are finished with
the movie project, you'll end up with big red X's indicating missing source
files.

Yes, it used to throw me a little as well at first.

But I now know what its about. The collection is a tiny database. All it
contains are pointers to locations within the actual video files stored
somewhere on your system. You can delete entries from this database without
any effects on your video file itself, indeed you can delete the entire
collection (database) and nothing will happen to your video file. You could
if you wanted even delete the collection after having used it in a project,
but that would make things a bit hard if you wanted to go back and edit the
project.

So, to clarify. The Collection is just a Database. It does not contain
any video at all. It only contains information about a video clip which
includes where it is stored on your hard drive as well as duration and time
stamps.

Hope that clears things up for you.

Hello again,

I forgot to add. even though the collection seems to indicate that you have
a collection of individual clips that make up your original movie file,
there are no actual clips at all. The method used enabled you to select
sections of your video according to a time change or possibly a scene
change
