I have Zone Alarm firewall running on my PC it is alarming that Defender
appears to bypass this completly. As far as I know all other software has to
be given permission to accsess the internet, no such request is made when I
attempt to update Defender. However I get no more infomation from defender,
so perhaps It's not even trying to access the internet. A bug perhaps!

WD uses Windows update service for updates. This is managed by svchost.exe,
Generic Host process for Win32 services. So if (as it would usually be) that
has internet permission in ZA, you won't get a ZA alert for WD when updating.

If you have joined Spynet, you would get an alert when WD (MSASCui.exe)
wants to connect to spynet2.microsoft.com. On my system it appears inh ZA
programs as User interface, with the castle icon.

Windows Defender works with Automatic Updates in Windows to automatically
install the latest definitions i think most firewall will allow Window
Automatic update to access the internet since it's a important part of
Window. You will only get alert from your firewall when Microsoft Spynet is
accessing the internet.
