The tray icon for defender has a yellow exclamation point. I tell it to
check for updates and
it seems to succeed but the exclamation point stays there. Is this normal?

The thing is that it looks like it checks for the updates and simply
doesn't find any. The update log seems OK. I just don't see
why the ICON doesn't return to normal. How does it know that
it needs to check for updates to begin with?

Does it request to do a scan? My vista laptop just had the icon you
described, when I did a system scan it went away.

I doesn't really request anything. The scans seems to run as scheduled with
no problems. I ran one manually though and it just finished and then the
icon
came back.

I installed SP1 and the Icon problem remained. But then I was able
to manually install windows updates (wasn't before sp1 for some reason)
I found one for defender sigs and after installing it, defender behaves
normally.

Not sure why clicking update from the defender icon doesn't work but it's
probably something to do with my IT guy handling windows update and
my box being the first with Vista on it. It looks like automatic updates
are not working and that was the cause.

Glad you got it fixed.
