Any ideas why this wont work? Seems that MS AntiSpyware was a much more
reliable program.

Default install.

I would check the task scheduler service and make sure that it is running.
If it is, check your event logs for signs that the scheduler is running into
any difficulty.

Been there done that. The Task Scheduler is not receiving the command. So,
I manually added the task which works.

If you open the scheduled tasks window, and go to Advanced, show hidden
tasks--do you find the task that Windows Defender schedules listed? What
about the Scheduled Tasks log--does that show information for the failures?

Is this XP or Windows 2000?

Hmmm....I guess it's really not working. I do see the logs but it looks
like it starts on schedule but then stops with an exit code of (0).

Windows 2000

I think an exit code of zero means a normal completion.

Is the time duration between start and stop appropriate?

Why do you think it isn't working? Is the time of last scan in the UI not
being updated?

Is there somewhere where I can download the old MS AntiSpyware? It seems to
be much more reliable plus I can view what's going on. BTW, this morning's
scan duration was 1 second.

I have the exact same problem as Koka... also on win 2K. I also agree that
the old MS AntiSpyware was better and should be made available again until
what MS plans to go forward with is more usable... beta 2 isn't it.

Last I looked, the old app was still available via www.filehippo.com.

However, I'd recommend sticking with us and solving the problems with the
new app, if possible--that's what the beta is for, and the old app isn't
going to come back or be supported. I'm assuming it will expire a the
currently set date, which isn't too far off.

I'll go back and read through this thread and see whether I can spot
anything I've missed--it seems puzzling--the scan time would indicate that
nothing happened, but the exit code sound like normal completion--I'm
confused.

Defender auto scanned for me today at 2:00 a.m. I think that in the options
menu, if you have the box checked for "Apply default actions to items
detected during a scan" and you haven't defined what to do with High, Medium
and Low alerts, the app wont auto scan. If you uncheck that box it may auto
scan.

I think a "Notify" option should be added to what to do with High, Medium
and Low alerts. Right now the only options are "Remove" and "Ignor" and a
user might not want to do either of those.

TexCat

There are default actions defined for each threat in the definitions.
Unfortunately, there's no way for the user to know in advance what those
actions are.

Scanning should happen, regardless of the settings in those boxes.

I do find these settings somewhat perplexing myself!

I was able to find MAS and install it. Of course, then it wanted to update
to WD so I let it. Then I reinstalled MAS since WD deleted MAS executables.
Then I disabled WD so now MAS runs fine and scans when it's supposed to.
LOL
