I have just upgraded from XP and I have tried everything but Windows Defender
will not switch on in Security Center.I have tried from the options in
Defender and it says that it is enabled.I have performed a scan and that
works. Why is security center saying it is not on?

What other security-center related software are you running? Antivirus, for
example.

I have tried AVG Avast and Kaspersky and none are detected in Security
Center.I am just concerned that the problem could lie elsewere.

Have tried all the above but still no luck. When I click on "Turn on Windows
Defender" a box comes up saying "Security Center is updating definitions for
Defender" and then it says "No new definitions available for download" and
Defender is not switched on . By the way Security Center wont recognise any
of the antivirus software I have tried such as AVG and Avast and says that I
have no antivirus even though it is running and performing scans ok.

Exactly the same symptoms and problems for me too...

Won't recognise AVG
Chooses to update instead of turning on when trying to turn it on

exactly the same issue here as well,

running vista x64 ultimate and sophos antivirus remote update (not
recognised)

and although defender seems to be running in services 9inlcuding showing the
defender icon with a tick), the security centre says it is not on and when i
try to update - searches for new definition - says none found - but remains
switched off.

Same for me as well. Security Centre also says that I have no anti-virus
software, when Avast! is installed and running happily. When I first
installed Vista I did not get this warning message, the security centre was
content that Defender was running and it recognised Avast!. What has
happened since then?

I'm also having the same problem:

When I click on "Turn on Windows Defender" a box comes up saying "Security
Center is updating definitions for Defender" and then it says "No new
definitions available for download" and Defender is not switched on .

Did anyone find an answer???

Hello Nanette...

If you're on Vista, try this
Run a cmd prompt as administrator.
Enter the following command: winmgmt /verifyrepository
and let us know the results.
If it reports "WMI repository is inconsistent" it means your WMI
repository is corrupted, and needs to be rebuilt.
