unable to update defender. When I try I get the following error message
0x8008109. I'm running windows 2000 with service pack4

Sorry am new to this, and the only way I can find to post a question or
problem is to click on a reply to another person's problem. When I try to
download Defender x64 it only downloads 99%,says time left is 1 sec.(7.54mb
of 7.54mb copied). That window just stays there and nothing happens.I removed
the original Microsoft Beta antispyware before trying the download.I
previously tried without having removed theearlier version, with the same
result,only 99% completes.
Hope someone can help, even if it's only to tell me how to post a question
or comment.
Thank you.

What browser are you using to access the groups? I think when this has come
up before, it has been a browser incompatibility. If you are using a
browser other than IE, you might try IE, even if it against your principles,
just to see what the interface should look like.

Are you certain that the 64 bit version is what you need? It isn't for 98%
of users or more. The other suggestion would be to try disabling your
antivirus's real-time protection for long enough to accomplish the download
and the install, and then enable it again.

Many thanks for your response.I am using IE.
Prior to receiving your response, I tried downloading to a saved file. When I
tried to open it ,the Windows Installer window said "This installation
package is not supported by this processor type.Contact your product vendor"
I am using a Toshiba laptop with Windows XP,with celeron processor.Since I
was able to download the original Windows Beta ,why would the Celeron now be
a problem?(Pardon my ignorance, but who is the product vendor, Microsoft or
Toshiba?)
If this does not throw any more light on the problem, please advise, and I
will then try your sugestion to dis-able Norton AV temporarily.
Many, many thanks for your ongoing help.
Sincerely,
Colin Stephens.

PS I tried the 85 bit download before the 64 bit,but got the same result. All
I want to do is replace my old
Windows beta with the latest version.

Tried diabling my antivirus software to download defender updates, but that
did not work, any other ideas?

Have you gone to Windows (or Microsoft) Update, done an express scan, and
applied all offered updates?

Beta2 updates by a very different mechanism from beta1. I know we all hate
change, but this was intended to use very well tested mechanims already in
place, and to play better in large corporate networks:

Windows Defender, within the application, updates using AutoUpdate. So--if
AutoUpdate is working, and talking to Microsoft's servers (as opposed to
internal Corporate servers)--updating with the application should work. In
some situations there is prerequisite software which is needed--doing an
express scan at Windows Update should bring that in.

You can also update Windows Defender definitions via Windows Update.

The first download I originally tried was the .msi.Have just tried it again
with the same 99% completion problem.I have autoupdate on, but tried an
express scan to be safe and the result was no priority updates needed.I did a
custom scan and got the following:
kb 904942, 829019, 909520, 909993, 896344.It will take 6 hours to download
these. Are any relevant to my problem.?Do not intend to download unless you
think doing so will help.
Regards,

I've not looked up those numbers, but you do not need anything which isn't
offered in an express scan.
I'll get back later today and re-read to see what I might have missed in
this thread, and see whether we can move this forward.

Bill,
Do you have any further ideas?Am going out of town for about a week and will
be "computerless"!

If you have nothing further ,having just read September issue of Consumer
Reports,I will give up on Defender 2 and install Webroot Spysweeper4.5, which
they rate very highly. They have reviewed 12 antispyware programs, and the
lowest.number 12, was Windows Beta 1.(That's not to say if Beta 2 had been
available to them ,that it would have rated higher than Webroot).Webroot is
not free, but at $25.00 with annual fee of $20.00 it's worth it for peace of
mind, since I am unable to get beta 2.

Regards,
Colin Stephens.

Thanks,Dave LM.Sounds like Spysweeper 5.0 is going from Beta frying pan into
the fire!!!
Consumer Reports also rated PC Tools Spyware Doctor 3.8 highly.Do you or
anyone else have any knowledge of this one's efficacy or problems.?
Thanks for your input.

Yes from MSAS days, although I've never used it. Spyware Doctor does have
many false positives since it's basically a heuristic analysis rather than
a definition based malware detector. It is rated by SpywareWarrior
favorably. I think SpySweeper will be back what I don't know is how long
it's going to take... and I just bought a two year sub... prior to all this
craziness with 5.0 :(

Thanks, for your response. Before finally giving up on Beta 2,I tried one more
time to download and install.Went like a dream!!!Maybe the Gods atMS listened
to my threat to dump it! Who knows?Where are you up to with Beta2
installation ?Are you still having problems.?
Regards,

Actually, I've never had any problems with Defender Beta 2, updates or
installation wise, but since it's still a Beta I don't consider it my first
line of defense against malware. I use it as a second opinion even though
Defender's RealTimeProtection runs along side two other RTP Anti-malware
applications one being definition based and one behavioral. Having all
three get along favorably is pretty important to my security. From the
testing I've done, I'm still not 100% protected in real time, maybe that's
an impossibility, but I am getting close.

Just to add to this:

After much hassle I finally gor defender. When I open it it says my
definitions are 192 day old and I need new one. Of course the button to get
updates is grayed out so I came here and saw your comment above.

I downloaded same and got:

Defender Failed

Definition Update 1.14.1643.13 for BETA Windows Defender (KB915597) <>

Further, when I was at updates I noted:

Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack 1
(KB886903)

How can this be. I just finished updating the OS etc. so I could install
defender.
This item was not on the list from this morning and it is from 2005??

Very very frustrating and confusing.

Any help appreciated.

Best regards

Sorry--lost track of time, and have had almost none today--made a trip to an
ocean beach to entertain a daughter who's been away at camp for some weeks.

I don't have time now to look back at the thread, I'm afraid.

I have seen that review, and basically am uncertain what they actually
tested, since they use the name Windows Defender, but refer to beta1. I
suspect beta1, but even then, I don't find the feature checkmarks
appropriate for either version. So--I'm confused by this article,
especially when recalling that a previous article put Microsoft Antispyware
at the top of the list.

Several things: The button was grayed out because an automatic update
(which you triggered by leaving checked the box suggesting that you allow
the program to search for new definitions and do a scan on starting)

So--that's normal. A failure on going to WindowsUpdate at that point might
also be not unexpected--because of the other update proceeding.

Are your definitions still at 1.0.0 at this point?

I'm not sure of the answer with regard to the .NET update. If you've
installed an application which requires .net, then this update will be
offered after such an installation. I'm not clear whether Windows Defender
is such an application or not--probably should be (that is me, clear!)--but
I'm not sure at the moment.

If as part of your updating the OS, you put in .Net, then this update would
normally be offered at the next visit to Windows Update. It would not have
been offered previously because it wasn't needed. You might well make a
case for it always being offered with the original .NET download--not sure
why that isn't possible.
