Defender update failure

I just installed Defender (at Windows request), and it immediately said it
needed to update it's files. It failed to do that, so I shut it down and
then restarted. It did the same thing, so I clicked on the "view
troubleshooting tips on the web." I followed the instructions on that
website (to run: Msiexec /x {A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C}), but it
didn't make a difference. When I run Defender, it says my definitions
haven't been updated in 103 days, but when I click on the "check now" button
it doesn't do anything for a few minutes and then eventually gives me an
error saying "Windows Defender was unable to complete the update: 0x80072efd"

Yes, I run WinXP Pro SP2 with Office 2003, and the auto-update features run
just fine. My Defender is listed as the following: Defender Version
1.1.1347.0, Engine 1.1.1303.0, Definition 1.0.0.0

I have the identical problem as GSMartin... and tried Engel's fix.. and it
did not work, still can not update .....

I have the exact same problem. I'm running windows 2000 sp2, I also have
autoupdate on. The error I get is that "there are no updates available".
That doesn't seem possible.
Need some help here...

just thinking, been there, tried that. still says it is NOT updated after
the website update completed installing. also tried the add/remove-change
suggested by engel, still same.
