Defender update error 0x80004002

Defender won't update. Shows error 0x80004002.

Windows installer 3.1 will not install any microsoft updates anymore.
It has stopped working without known reason. It doesn't display an error
code either. It just says failed to install updates.

Is Defender not updating because installer 3.1 isn't functioning?

Anyone have any ideas about either of the above?

Hi Engel,

I have tried many things including the MS update site & I am currently in
the process of getting help from MS tech support, but the things he has
advised me to do, haven't worked either. So I thought I'd try this as well.

As I have spent hours tonight reading up on other peoples threads, I have
found that I am actually one of many with the same problem.

Defender isn't the problem now I see, Windows installer 3.1 is the problem.

I have uninstalled 3.1, reinstalled it manually, it seems to have worked
successfully, then I try to get critical updates (of which I apparently need
80 of) & they download, then try to install, then fail. With NO error code or
explanation.

Nothing installs without the installer 3.1 & I need an installer to install,
installer 3.1!!

How stupid is that?

The tech guy is suggesting as best he can, but maybe someone out there who
has previously had this fault & fixed it (or knows of it), could tell me how
I go about it.

I've looked up the KB help site as well with no success.

This is what I did...

Go to the main update centre and click on the utility that uses ActiveX to
scan your computer.

It will look for validation and then ask you to install two updates, one of
which is an update for validation.

Install them, once installed allow the ActiveX control to load all the
updates needed for your computer, Windows Defender updates are at the top,
install all of them as a reassurance for Windows security issues.

That should do it...

I'm having the same problems with defender needing 3.1 to install. I removed
the installer program & then had 3.0 installer then tried to reinstall
defender when i got this message {cannot install with out 3.1.} I can not
even get automatic updates to work now either.
It give me this message now = error found: code 0x80004002.
 
I am experiencing the same problem. I tried to rectify it. Had a virus
disable my antivirus program and since removal, I can not download any
updates on either windows update or defender. Same error code as above.
