Defender update button

Sometimes when I check for updates with the update button (under
'Help/About') I get the following message:
"Windows Defender was unable to complete the update. The device does not
recognize the command."

What does this error mean?

BTW, I just install the new version 1347 so I haven't had time to tell if
the error is still happening.
 
In my experience, that error is transient--and may indicate that another
update is happening simultaneously--i.e. Windows Update, AutoUpdate, or,
perhaps, Windows Live OneCare. I've seen this several times in the last few
days, patching systems with the Tuesday security patches, and each time, I
believe simply retrying the operation succeeds.
