When I randomly check Defender I find it switched off without having turned
it off myself. How can I keep it automartically switched on?

Are you runing OneCare? By "switched off" do you mean that the icon is not
showing?

I have the same problem and I am running one care. Every time I restart
windows or every time defender does an update it turns itself off!! THIS IS
VERY ANNOYING!!!!
If someone knows why please give it up.

Please read the link that Engel posted. This behavior is normal with
OneCare installed, and does not mean that you are missing protection.

Windows Defender is part of OneCare. What you're seeing is normal. The only
justification for WD to remain on the system is access to the WD Options
menu and the WD Software Explorer.

Thanks Bob et al - I will stop nervously trying to switch Defender on - I
accept that it is still working as part of One-care when it says it is
switched off. Any way to prove this is the case?

The link Engel gave you discusses the issue. In case you missed it:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=932902
This issue occurs because Windows Defender is disabled when you install
Windows Live OneCare. Windows Live OneCare determines whether Windows
Defender is enabled whenever you start the computer. If Windows Live OneCare
finds that Windows Defender is manually enabled, Live OneCare will disable
Windows Defender.
Note Windows Live OneCare includes the antispyware component of Windows
Defender. Therefore, Windows Defender does not have to be running when
Windows Live OneCare is running.

Hello Jock,

If you want to test to see if Windows Defender is protecting your system
from spyware in real-time, try EICAR the harmless test file...

This is from Joe Faulhaber [MSFT]:
"We've had EICAR in our definitions for about two months now, which also
means we're not communicating the content of the definitions very well, but
that's another issue.
For those of you who want to know what we're talking about, the EICAR group
came up with a harmless file detected by antivirus products so you can
safely verify the product's working. If you haven't seen Windows Defender
detect something, visit http://eicar.org , download the 68 byte file
eicar.com.txt, and copy it to your startup folder. Your AV solution (that
you should be running *IN ADDITION* to Windows Defender) will also pick it
up.
