We see a lot of problems with Defender and read the reviews of testing with
interest. First hand anecdotal experience from an ordinary user is contained
in the body of an email I received from a friend at AOL. She helps folks on
the message boards there try to solve malware problems. The following is a
story she sent me:

Interesting bit of information for you. Early last week I helped a user
that had 2 keyloggers on her computer. One was the program below.

Download MindSoft Secret Agent 1.2 Free Trial - Know what happens in your PC
when you're not there

The online scan at ZoneLabs found it but could not deal with it. The user
download Windows Defender on her own, I didn't suggest it, and started the
scan and went to bed. When she got up in the morning, it was done and it had
found and removed this key logger and another one.

SpySweeper and all the others didn't find a thing. LOL

So even though it got a less stellar review, it will get something that the
others don't find.

It is great to see these. We are always improving detection and removal
capabilities so as new threats come about, we will investigate them quickly.

Most people don't understand how hard it is to detect stuff (if you go on a
ram page and block every nasty, you will be sued(critized) If you try to
be nice and block only the really bad ones you get sued(critized) for to
doing enough)
Either way you can't win. But you guys do a good job anyway.

Windows Defender Live (Beta), help needed from Microsoft.
Except for the new download Signature Version 1.14.1314.1, all previous
versions have fallen into a loop to High Priority Definition Update
1.14.1314.1 for Beta Windows Defender (KB915597). The users of the Windows
OneCare Live (Beta) have downloaded automatically the file in excess of 54
times, as per the Update History, with no positive results. Previous results
of the Windows Defender (Beta) Definition Updates that worked are:
1.13.1276.3, 1.13.1272.4, 1.13.1276.16, 1.13.1282.6 and 1.13.1386.1 with KB
892519, 892519, 892519, 915597 and 915597 respectively. The loop failure
started when trying to update to 1.13.1288.5 and 1.13.1314.1 both with
KB915597, from older Signature Versions. Worst of all, no removal of the
Defender beta is possible nor installation of the newer 1314 version ontop of
the other.
