Defender scheduled scans starting before/after scheduled time

Although scheduled to 2 a.m., I have checked scans have never started at the
right time, usually within 40 minutes before or after 2 a.m (event 1000 in
event viewer)....

Has anyone had this also? And why is it happening so?

Though I've never seen this mentioned anywhere by Microsoft, there's a fairly
obvious reason.

The default configuration is set to 'Check for updated definitions before
scanning'. What would happen if millions of Defender copies did this at the
same instant?

I'm guessing that all clients compute some offset from the hour selected for
an automated scan so there's less overhead created at one time.

It would be logical if it were always starting after the scheduled time but
before???
Besides, that is not any correct if you are doing some planned work before
and get interrupted / messed up by the spyware scan!

This version of Defender is far too poor to be out to the general public, it
should never have become available as it is really buggy and completely
useless as a serious protection.
 
You won't get an answer if you don't want one. This is only a guess as I
stated, but whether the scan occurs sometime shortly before or after the hour
selected, I've never seen it more than 30 minutes off myself.

Since I'm only occasionaly around when it scans, this rarely bothers me, but
even when I am, I can still browse the web reasonably even though this is an
old Win 2000 PC from several years ago.

My suggestion is you use something else since Microsoft isn't trying to
please everyone, just those who might not have protection if it wasn't free
and from them. You obviously like something else better, so use it instead,
at least until Defender is out of Beta.

I'm quite happy with Defender myself as are millions of others, even though
I've had to help bug out some issues, which is after all what a Beta is for.
