Defender running in taskbar?

I did a half hearted search but my question is to convulted to search.

Everything seems to be right with my defender but shouldn't I see it running
in my taskbar(startup area)? I see no icon plus my task manager doesn't show
it as a process. It seems like the real time option isn't working, with beta
1 it would ask me to allow things when I installed new software this one
doesn't do anything. It runs at its scheduled time to sweep the system but
that appears all it is doing.

Does Microsoft have a reporting system for bugs, I thought that was what
beta was all about, but then again I am not really in the know about betas
and such.....or now that I think about it I don't know much about the meaning
of life and how gravity keeps all these planets aligned they way they are
and.............ugh

You won't see it in the taskbar until it has something to tell you.

I wasn't clear enough Frank I'm sorry but there have been things that I
believe it should have picked up, beta one picked up things almost everytime
I downloaded something, beta 2 I have never seen in real time. Beta 1 even
when I rebooted asked me to allow items that run in the taskbar. Do you have
any ideas how I can test it to see if it is working?

Hi Brad,

You won`t see any icon in the taskbar with this Beta. Whether or not it will
be reinstated by popular request remains open to question - I think many
would like to see it. Right now it will only appear if some warning/user
input is required.

Task manager. I believe there was a post from Bill Sanderson (can`t remember
which group), addressing this same question. It seems WD runs as a hidden
task, so you will not see it under the Application tab of task manager.
However, if you select the Process tab you should see MSASCui.exe (the user
interface), and MsMpEng.exe (the service executable) running.

Bug Reporting: My personal feeling is submit on here. The MS developers read
these posts on a daily basis and seriously evaluate your constructive
comments and suggestions - although direct daily dialogue is not possible.
For that we have noteably Bill Sanderson MVP abley assisted by other MVPs,
IT professionals, Administrators and helpers who, thru their knowledge and
personal experiences, will make every endeavour to answer or address your
issues. You can learn a lot from these news groups.

One final point. I often see people posting requests for help, a solution
offered or more info requested and then not even the courtesy of a response
to the outcome. Depressing. One can go a long way to help oneself, MS and
others by giving: FEEDBACK !!

Windows Defender (beta 2) is designed to have fewer pop-up
notifications than MS AntiSpyware (beta 1.) Supposedly this was done as a
convenience so users would not be bothered with them.

Be sure Windows Defender Service is running in Services. RPC must also be running.

In your Task Manager, you should see both MSASCui.exe and MsMpEng.exe as processes. Real Time Protection, such as it it, should be running at this point.
