anybody having the same problem or know how to fix it? im not that pc
literate so please be gentle!!!

Hi Mick,

I'm getting the same issue - there are various forums saying that you need
to switch off windows update and then try, but i have tried that at least 6
times and no joy. Anyone else have any ideas?

Error code: 0x80240029

Thanx

Ian B

I will share with you what I would do.

Error found: Code 0x80240029

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the SoftwareDistribution folder is corrupted.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:

1. Start the computer in safe mode. To do this, follow these steps:a.
Restart the computer.

b. Press the F8 key as the computer restarts.

Note You have to press the F8 key before the Windows Vista progress
indicator appears.

c. When the Advanced Boot Options menu appears, use the arrow keys to
select the Safe Mode option, and then press ENTER.

2. Rename the SoftwareDistribution folder. To do this, follow these steps:a.
Click Start, type %windir% in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

Note In this step, %windir% represents the path of the Windows system
folder. Typically, C:\Windows is the path of the Windows system folder.

b. Locate the SoftwareDistribution folder.

c. Right-click the SoftwareDistribution folder, and then click Rename.

d. Type SoftwareDistribution.old, and then press ENTER.

3. Restart the computer.

Hello to all of you out there with the 0x802400
error message; ENGLE posted an answer that works on 4/27. I was having the
same problem and by using each step of his instrucitons my Defender updated
and was accepted by Windows Live One Care. Engle, we all thank you. Keep up
the good work!
Another writer from that same time period posted a link that led to
the same answer - Article ID : 394562 last review : 4/4/07
Revision:1.0. You can get there by going to

Hi

I faced the same problem too and tried the method below but unable to rename
the SoftwareDistribution folder under Safe Mode.

I have found the folder and tried to right-click the folder, the system just
hangs there (not responding) at all.

Is there any other method that I can use?? Can I rename the folder under
normal windows mode??

Plz advise. Thanks.

BTW Chuck E, Thanks for posting back and for your words.

That's always a nice jester when we get back a post indicating if the
suggestions were helpful or not.

Have a good day

Hello Daphne,

Have you looked at the event log? Anything recorded around the hang?

The content of a particular file apparently caused this behavior

The following steps are much efective if are done in safe mode.
--

First remove all temporarily junk.
--

Enable Hidden Files and folder's.

To enable hidden files and folders Go to task bar, click Start > My Computer.
On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
On the View tab, uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
Make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' is enabled.
Display the contents of system folders' is checked & 'Hide extentions for
known file types ' is not checked then press ªpply.

You can set this back later by opening the same page and pressing 'restore
defaults' then pressing ªpply,

Clear prefetch files by going to Start menu and Run and typing prefetch, and
then click OK.
The problem is that many spyware/malware/virus/Trojan (you get the idea)
writers use it to cause their programs to get respawned the moment you launch
the app whose prefetch data is linked to the code placed there by the
infection.

Open a Internet window and go to Internet Options, Delete Cookies and Temp
Files, and included all off line content.

Then also go to Start menu and Run and type (with %)
%temp%
and clear that fºlder. Also go to Start menu and Run and type:
%windir%\temp
and clear that folder.
--

Empty your IE cache and your other temporary file folders, eg: c:\temp,
c:\windows\temp or C:\Documents and Settings\<name>\Local Settings\Temp (the
path to your temp folder will change depending on your name) - sometimes
programmes can be hidden in there - watch out for mysterious *.exe files or
*.dll files in those fºlders; and
c:\Documents and Settings\username\local settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5 and delete all the files in those directories and
subdirectºries).

OR

Try with CCleaner and or HDCleaner for a more thorough cleaning, running in
safe mºde.

CCleaner - http://www.ccleaner.com
http://www.ccleaner.com/downloadbuilds.asp
There are 3 builds available.
1. Standard Build also includes the Yahoo Toolbar but that can be
UNcheckmarked during the installation if you so desire.
2. Basic does NOT include the Toolbar
3. Slim also does NOT include the Toolbar and is English only.

Note, When you install CCleaner, uncheck the Yahoo toolbar option.
Note, in Options, Advanced, uncheck - Only delete files in Windows folders
older than 48 hours.
Note: uncheck Windows Defender in the applications.
Do a scan with all the check marks on.
Open CCleaner and press "Windows" "Applications" and Run Cleaner from the
menu choose 'Issues' and then press scan for issues, Repair any fºund, until
you get “0 bytes to be removedâ€.

CCleaner even has a built-in Registry Cleaner. It's not the best (not
CCleaner's main function), but it will find invalid registry entries that
most Registry Cleaners will not. Unlike the Disk Cleaners with a Registry
Cleaner, CCleaner does really fast scanning for Registry Issues. The reason
is CCleaner doesn't want to effect Windows performance or effect any
applications. It's better to be safe than sorry!

The first time you run CCleaner's Issues scanner you'll have to keep running
it back-to-back until it finds nothing.

One scenario is a registry key may only be a reference pointing to a
completely different location in the registry and when it's removed then that
reference link is also noticed as being invalid on a subsequent scan. It's
generally a good idea to keep running the Issues scan until nothing is
listed.

For power users:
http://home.tiscali.de/zdata/hdcleaner_e.htm
Please read for more instructions in Review at MajorGeeks
--

Run chkdsk /f
for quick scan,

OR

chkdsk /r
for extended scanning
--

Reboot
--

Start menu and Run and typing sfc /scannow
You will need to get your XP CD

Now, try to update, if no dice. Try to rename on safe mode again

I hope this post is helpful.

Let us know how it works ºut.

Hi Daphne,

I knew there was a question that I forgot to get to...

Is your clock and time zonem also the date set properly?

Еиçеl

You can't rename the folder in normal mode, I'm afraid.

Re-trying the operation in safe mode is what I would try.

Hi Engel,

Thanks for the advice!

However I tried the method - still I am unable to change the name of the
folder.

The date & time are being set properly.

BTW I am currently using Windows Vista OS - will it have anything to do with
me trying to rename the folder under safe mode??

Plz help!

Or is there a way for me to un-install Windows defender and re-install
again??

Hi Daphne,

Is hard to tell if using Vista vs XP make any diference when trying to
rename a file.

There is not too many Vista users around here, the following sugestions work
for XP users, give a try and lets know the out come.

Suggestion 1: Rename temporary folder SoftwareDistribution

1. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following
command in the opened window.

net stop WuAuServ

2. Click Start, Run, type: %windir% and press Enter.
3. In the opened folder, rename the folder SoftwareDistribution to SDold.
4. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following
command in the opened window.

net start WuAuServ

Please go to the Windows Update site to test this issue. If the error
persists, please go to the following suggestion.

Suggestion 2: Rename CatRoot2 folder

1. Close all the open windows.
2. Click Start->Run, type: %windir% and press Enter.
3. Locate and open the System32 folder.
4. Find the CatRoot2 folder, right-click on it, and select RENAME. Change
the name to CR2OLD. Make sure you press Enter after typing in the new name,
so the changes are executed.
5. Close this window.

Note.- Some times, you have to stop Automatic Update Service (WuAuServ)
first before you can rename the folder.

Reboot

Try to go for the updates

About reinstalling WD using Vista, I don't know how is done. Sure I will
like to know too.

As always, you should make sure that you have got a working system restore
point before you run any test.

Let us know how it works ºut.

Hi Daphne,

I suggest to go to Performance Information and Tools, and run a few checks.
Some checks only take 60 seconds.

Click on the Start button.

Click on the Control Panel menu option.

Click on Performance Information and Tools

Click on Advanced Tools in the left hand navigation bar.

Click on Generate a system health and performance.

Good luck
