Hi all
Do you need to have "Windows firewall" turned on as well as "Windows
Defender " or can it be turned off.

Yes IMHO, Windows Firewall is about as effective as a fart in a
thunderstorm, turn it "off" period. Just use your normal firewall,
that's if you have one! I've used Kerio for past two years after using
bought and paid for full versions of various others. No doubt other
posters will offer up their own preferences but Kerio suits my needs.

As for Windows Defender, read the posts here, loads of user problems, yup,
but it's in "Beta" form atm init? Uncle Bill offered up Microsoft AntiSpy
after buying out Giants original prog. I'd used that too and found it
excellent, Owd Bill managed to blow that one too, although I still
preferred MAS to W.D in it's present form. M$ has cobbled WD together and
whacked it out in a half hearted attempt at tempting users to trial and
error it for them, anyone with an ounce of sense knows there's millions of
M$ product users who have no clue whatsoever in delving into their OS
Registry to get a program working satisfactorily. Any good/most
applications are offered to customers in working form, if they don't do
what they claim then they're updated/patched etc ASAP, Beta's are used at
your own risk init? Of course there's exceptions to this, many free AV,
Online Scanners and Firewall progs are well-known for false positives for
example. A rule I use is, search Web, the forums and newsgroups for other
users opinions and experiences before you install an app.

I have no idea of your user knowledge/skills etc so I may well be teaching
you to suck eggs, apologies if I am. That's just my two pence worth, hope
it helps.

Best.

I disagree completely. The Windows firewall is every bit as effective as
any other software firewall at interdicting inbound traffic. Do as Engel
says--leave it on--it just works.

You need: 1) a firewall
2) system patched up to date via Windows Update
3) a working, updated antivirus application.

After all these things comes Windows Defender. The order is
intentional--that's a hierarchy, and I'd worry about things in that order.
