Defender not sowing up in the system tray. I have tried reinstalling once.
Then I went to add/remove programs, clicked on change and from there selected
the install process again. Restarted my system & still no defender showing in
the systray. Isn't it supposed to?

Any ideas?

This is the default for the program. There will be a change at some point
to allow this option under administrator control, but for now, no icon
unless user action is needed.

What are the program names in Task Manager that I would look for to know that
it is running or not?

Hello Jim,

that is MSASCui.exe,
it runs as a service, so you can find it there to and turn it on and of
if you like!

It's a bit complicated, and I don't think I have it right yet:

MSAScui.exe is the program that provides the UI, but is always running as a
user mode process, as I understand it. The Windows Defender service is
provided by msmpeng.exe and runs as a system service--you can see it at a
command prompt by typing net start and looking at the end of the list, or
via other ways of looking at running services.

mpcmdrun.exe is a command-line executable which triggers and monitors
signature updates from the app (via help, about, for example--or when
specified in general options as happening before a scheduled scan--and which
does scanning. It lives in \program files\windows defender and you can run
it and get syntax info, which seems to confuse everyone who has looked at
it!

So--if a scan or sig update is in progress, you'd see mpcmdrun.exe.
Otherwise, both msmpeng.exe and msascui.exe should be listed.
