defender never reminds me to scan anymore

When I first got defender it used to ask me every few days to do a scan.
It doesn't do that now, although everything else works fine. Should it ask?
Version 1.14.1468.9

What's the last scan date listed at the bottom of the home page of Windows
Defender?

I've noticed that too, and am grateful that it's stopped. For WD I do a
manual quick scan after every update, mainly to see if it has any false
positives (none that I've found so far). There's also Norton AV, Ad Aware SE,
Spybot S&D on my system, all of which I keep updated and treat similarly
(scan after update). That's quite enough scans a week (never found anything
nasty yet).

No, it is not on automatic Tom.
Bill, the last scan date is this afternoon. Been 4 or 5 days since last one.

Is it true that if I clear history that this causes Defender to reset itself
and therefore not ask? If not, what else could be thre reason?

I know that this reminder frequency was changed in an update, but I don't
know precisely what the new rule is. It might well be that if automatic
updates are off, you are not reminded. It might also be that it is set for
a couple of weeks.

Anybody want to mess with the clock and test?

I believe that the Automatic Reminder to Scan was removed with last update.
What does happen, is that a modified WS icon on the system tray.
When you click on it and Open it, WD reminds you of the last scan date and
that you need to scan.

But mine is set to Automatic scan. But I have noticed that when I have had
to reinstall WD and then downloaded definition updates AND have not
performed a scan at that time, the icon does appear.

My icon is there all the time Larry as I choose it to be so under options,
perhaps you are right about the scan reminder having gone in the last update.
However I asked about the history files being removed and the effects of
that, as I use ccleaner and the new version cleans the history logs of
Defender, and someone said that this will reset the scan reminder each time
it's cleaned. Is that possible?

What settings under options are you talking about? Start Menu | Properties
Hide Active Icons option, or Windows Defender Options (which my versions
does not have - Beta 2).

In Defender go to options, Real Time Protection Options, make sure you use
the scroll bar at the right hand side to scroll down to the BOTTOM of this
section. You can then see the option to have the icon always on, or only if
Defender detects an action to take. Lots of people seem to miss the options
futher down because the page ends in a way that it looks as if is nothing
else.
