Defender is driving me nuts..

I didn't post that last one, it just went..
Anyways, I don't even know if I'm on the right board, but I've beeen all
over to find the right one, & this one will have to do..
I had Defender & it worked well..[XP home..] 1 yr old Dell 9150..
All of a sudden I got a message 0x800106ba..Went to MS forum, other people
have the same problem & the answer was download 'Windows installer cleanup',
which I did.. [Big Mistake ??] I uninstalled Defender..The task bar icon
disappeared, but Defender is still in my start, but when I click on it, I get
the error message only. It's no longer in my program list..
I tried to download a new Defender, but it won't download. Today i found a
whole bunch of Defender files in C:\Program Files..I tried to delete them but
I get the message MpShHoook.dll:Access denied..
What can I do ?? Really appreciate HELP !!! HELP !!

Have you tried these operations running in safe mºde?

In safe mode, some of the protective services which these programs use to
ensure that they aren't removed, are not running, so they are easier to
remºve.
Getting into Windows Safe Mode.

The spelling or syntax errors in the manual entering of the data causes
problems in the interpretation of the findings.

Nothing found under MpShHoook.dll

after that ?? How do I find that MSHhook file ?? [I managed to get rid of a
whole bunch of Defender files after I mailed you, I found them in C:\\program
files..But MSHook won't go away] I checked all the other links you gave me,

Hi Patty,

Remember whatever you do, (installing and updateting or unistalling) always
as a administratºr.
This is the key!
The installation as an admin is not enough.
You needed to login as an Adm!n!stratºr.


Enable Hidden Files and folder's.

To enable hidden files and folders Go to taskbar, click Start > My Computer.

On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.

On the View tab, uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.

Make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' is enabled.

Display the contents of system folders' is checked & 'Hide extentions for
known file types ' is not checked then press ªpply.

You can set this back later by opening the same page and pressing 'restore
defaults' then pressing ªpply,

HOW TO Enable Hidden Files:

Empty your IE cache and your other temporary file folders, eg: c:\temp,
c:\windows\temp or C:\Documents and Settings\<name>\Local Settings\Temp (the

programmers can be hidden in there - watch out for mysterious *.exe files or
*.dll files in those fºlders;
and c:\Documents and Settings\user name\local settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5 and delete all the files in those directories and
subdirectºries).

Now, boot in Safe Mode.

2 of the sneaky little buggers-Castle Cops Defender & MSHook..
& ALL from my Recycle Bin too..
Thank you SO much, Engel..
Only one problem left, there's still 2 castle icons Windows Defenders in my
'Start index' how do I get rid of those ?? They're empty, but the icons are
still there..

Whatever you do, (installing and updateting or unistalling) always as a
administratºr.


As always, you should make sure that you have got a working system restore
point before you run any test.


I would suggest staying on the side of caution... Use System Restore to Undo
Changes if Problems Occur

Now you can give a try with Ccleaner to get rid of those icons.

Note: uncheck in Applications, the box for Utilities.

[My PC never asks about it] [??]
