Defender is disabled

The last few times I've started Vista, Windows defender shows up with the
warning that it is disabled. I turn it on and the next time it comes back up
as disabled. Did I miss something here? I looked at other threads but
didn't find this issue, although I might have missed something!

Iplant,

By chance do have a third party a/v and/or anti-spyware application
installed on top of Vista Beta?

If so, likely that is the source for the conflict; Defender disabled...

A much smoother functionality of "current" Vista Beta Versions is achieved
by not confusing Vista's OS; by not including those third party applications
one has used for too many years.

Is it possible for running Vista Certified third party applications, yes. Do
they commonly create conflicts for Vista Beta, yes.

sounds like a malware infection. I had the same thing in xp when
infected with a variant of smitfraud (comes in spysheriff and other crap
free software)

I'll check, but except for ATI and a recent update for the Creative driver, I
only have micrsoft products installed on Vista.

Any chance you installed Windows Live One Care? It disables the Windows
Defender service in Vista.

Which version of OneCare? You need the beta (1.5) for Vista. If you're
using some flavor of 1.1, I think the 1.5 beta is still available at:

http://ideas.live.com/ProgramPage.aspx?versionId=b2456790-90e6-4d28-9219-5d7207d94d45.Also, OneCare WILL turn off Defender anyway because it uses its own version. However, you shouldn't be seeing that notice. You should just see a greenOneCare icon.If you still need them, the Windows Live OneCare Forums are at this URL:http://forums.microsoft.com/WindowsOneCare/default.aspx?ForumGroupID=28&SiteID=2"Iplant" <[email protected]> wrote in messagehaven't installed anything except Windows One Care.> --> always learning>>> "Vista Ready" wrote:>>> Iplant,>>>> By chance do have a third party a/v and/or anti-spyware application>> installed on top of Vista Beta?>>>> If so, likely that is the source for the conflict; Defender disabled...>>>> A much smoother functionality of "current" Vista Beta Versions isachieved>> by not confusing Vista's OS; by not including those third partyapplications>> one has used for too many years.>>>> Is it possible for running Vista Certified third party applications, yes.Do>> they commonly create conflicts for Vista Beta, yes.>> -->> Life is Wonderful while using Vista !>>>> Posting & Painting>> "Painting, n.: The art of protecting flat surfaces from the weather, and>> exposing them to the critic.">>>> Ambrose Bierce>> ***************>>>>>>>> "Iplant" wrote:>>>> > The last few times I've started Vista, Windows defender shows up withthe>> > warning that it is disabled. I assume you mean the OneCare v1.5 beta, which can run on Vista. It
disables and replaces the function of Defender. But as it is a beta, there
are some rough edges, including showing that there is something worng in
Defender not running in Security Centre. I think OneCare is rubbish anyway.

Is the irony lost on you? The problem is being caused my a Genuine
Microsoft application that has been Certified for Vista.

Thanks SS,

I'll just wait for the real thing...it's only a minor disturbance anyway.

Windows Live OneCare incorporates antispyware protection, so it disables
Defender to prevent conflicts. If you wish to use the other tools of Defender,
you may start it manually, as you've learned, but OneCare will disable it again
on restart. If you choose to uninstall Windows Live OneCare, Defender will once
again be active.

Stephen,

I like One Care and do have it purchased and installed on XP. Can I assign
one of my 2 remaining licenses and install it on Vista? I do plan on keeping
both operating systems on this machine! Although it takes forever to run
tune up since it insists on doing all of my drives.

Absolutely. Yes, you can install OneCare on the Vista side of a dual boot and
activate it with your subscription LiveID and it is one of your 3 licenses. I
suppose you could stretch the interpretation and note that you can't have both
running concurrently, so that both installs combined are really only 1 install.
That would only be an issue if you also wanted to use it on 2 other physical
machines. :-)
