Defender does not start in Vista Beta2

We did a clean install of Vista Beta2 and all seems to be working reasonably
well, except Security Center complains about no virus protection. However, it
does show that Spyware and other Malware protection is active. Inspection of
the Windows Application log reveals the following event ID 3003 occurring on
every startup:

Windows Defender Real-Time Protection checkpoint has encountered an error
and failed to start.
User: VISTA-BETA\default
Checkpoint ID: 25
Error Code: 0x80070005
Error description: Access is denied.

I am able to start Defender from Start - All Programs without any apparent
error.

Since both Defender and Vista are beta and hence both are suspect, which
newsgroup should this be posted to?

Anyone else in this newsgroup seeing this error?
 
Firstly, defender is not an A/V. You'll have to download and install
something like Avast 4.7. As for the error, I get that also although
services says defender loaded.
 
Use the Microsoft Beta Client you downloaded (Feedback link on your Vista
desktop) and report it as a Vista bug. The bug triage teams at MS will take
care of routing to the Defender team as needed.

Yes, apparently, Windows Live is not ready for beta.

Yes, the service loads, but you aren't protected, since the RTP component
(MSASCui.exe) does not load (does not show in Task Manager). It can be loaded
manually after login, at least on this machine. The other problem is that the
default setting is to suppress the Defender icon in the notification area.
So, we have a situation where not only does the protection fail to load, but
the user is blissfully unaware that he/she is unprotected - a major flaw.

So, back to the issue with Defender RTP failing to load, does that belong in
this forum, or in the Defender forum?

Tried that, but I have no way of telling if it is really working, at least
on the problem machine. When I get to the end, nothing shows up in the File
Transfer Manager. How do you tell if it is really working?
 
The MBC? Did you download and install the MBC and Transfer tools?

What didn't work? Did you fill out the bug report in the MBC and make
appropriate selections for saving the cab file and so on? The ftp tool only
kicks in when you are satisfied with your report and send it. The ftp tool
shows you its progress in sending the report and reports 'completed' when
the report has been successfully forwarded.
 
Ok, mystery solved. There appears to be a bug in the interaction between the
file transfer tool and the MBC that probably only occurs when you first
install it. During the tool install process, the file xfer tool opens after
it installs and stays open until you close it. I just left it open, and went
on to fill out the report and save it as a .cab file. I figured that it would
get sent when I finished, but nothing showed up as sent in the file xfer
tool.

I then tried the Upload function in the MBC and could find and open my saved
cab file, but again, nothing happened. I then closed the file xfer tool and
again opened the saved cab file and bingo, it worked.

Minor nit, but the button is labeled 'Transfer'
 
Yeah, I remembered that after I posted. Glad you got it going. The panel
on the left of the MBC is extremely useful and the helpfile is too. Notice
the recorder? You can start recording, do the actions to replicate the
issue, and stop recording. A file gets added to your bug report without
further actions by you. You will not see any graphic indication of that,
but can trust that the recording gets packaged with your report.

Yes, the tool looks very useful. Having been a former software QA tester and
having been in charge of public beta programs, I wish we would have had
something like this back in the day. Would have it much easier to sort
problems out. In the case of this beta, timely/pertinent feedback on problems
would mostly be impossible without it.

Now, if I could only get Microsoft to fix all the usability problems I've
found in Vista...
