Defender definitions not updating?

I try to update the defender definitions and am told by the pop up in the
bottom right hand corner of the screen that the definitions have been
updated. However when i click back on to the windows defender page it says
that they haven't been updated for days? This is still the case when i reboot
etc. I have even tried reinstalling.
In the bottom right hand corner, the windows defender icon (castle) still
has an exclamation mark on it which i assume means it still needs updating.
The defender page is currently saying that I have not updated for 36 days
despite updating today.

Any ideas what is going on?

Please help.

Thanks.

Hello smudger,

Can you go to Windows Update, do an Express scan, and apply all offered
updªtes
http://update.microsoft.com

Once that is finished, can you verify the update installs? There are many
pre-requisite files which are needed from windows update and signature
update with windows defender will fail until you hªve these files.

Follow these steps, even though the original cause of the problem appears
not to apply.

What build of Windows Defender are you on--see the top version number in
Help, about...

Build .1347 is what is presently available at the download center, but no
broad upgrade notice has gone out--so you need to re-download and run the
...MSI file to get this update. (and then wait 3 days to see whether it is
fixed!)
Version 1.1.1347.0 .

Users who normally select advanced Spynet membership should be aware that
the install process will set you back to basic membership, so it's a good
idea to revisit both the Spynet membership area of Tools, and the Options
area--to see what's different, and check that your old choices have been
preserved.
