TO clarify, the 0x80072efd error means that the client cannot connect to WU.
This error can be a number of things, but it is not defender specific. Users
who run into this error may also have issues running automatic updates.

I believe a lot of problems now with updates is firewall
problems and blocked svchosts

I think the issue is that both Update and Defender are doing updates via
svchost.exe. Trying to figure out what rules to setup in the firewall
that allows svchost access to the internet only when Update and Defender
are using it are not obvious at all.
