I've been away for the weekend, got back and booted my PC which had been down
all w/e. WinDefend automatically started up but I'm sure I haven't seen an
option to make it do that and I can't find one to stop it doing that - any
ideas ?

(note: I aborted it because it was too power-hungry and I wanted to download
the latest definitions and run it later.)

If you mean that a scan started automatically, this is expected behavior.
I'd suggest setting scheduled scans to be intelligent quickscans, rather
that full scans--much quicker, much less resource intensive, and designed to
catch any in-place or live spyware.

You could also set less frequent scheduled scans, or even none--but that's
probably undesirable, unless you schedule them yourself using the Windows
task scheduler.
