Hello,
I've read the posts on the above topic, but still need some advice as I've
yet to find a solution. I cannot run the windows defender interface,
therefore cannot uninstall or use at all due to the above message. This
message pops up every time I start the computer and I need to remove it
before I throw the laptop out the window.

I have windows vista 32bit home premium version with Mcaffee running also.
Please advise how I can rid mysef of this annoying pop-up message if I
cannot use the windows defender interface, no uninstall.

Thanks.

Please bear in mind that McAfee is likely the cause of the problem.

I don't have a setup to reproduce this issue, I'm afraid, so I am not sure
what is possible.

You cannot uninstall Windows Defender on Vista--it is a part of the OS.
However, there are provisions both for the user to disable it, and for other
programs to disable it. If those mechanisms are used, no error message
results.

In a similar circumstance on Windows 7, here's what I did:

I typed "windows defender" into the start, search box, and hit enter. A
dialog box came up which stated that Windows Defender was turned off and did
I want to turn it on. I clicked on the link to turn it on. After some
minutes, the UI appeared, and I was able to go to Tools, Options,
administrator, and uncheck "use this program."

What are you trying to get the UI to run? I think that it should, even
though the underlying service is disabled .

Hi,

I had the same problem after re-installing McAfee. The following fix worked
for me (in Windows Vista) :-

In Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services. Scroll down to find
'Windows Defender'. Right-click, then select 'Properties'. In the 'General'
tab the 'Startup type' was set to 'Manual'. I changed it to 'Automatic' then
selected 'Apply' > 'OK'.

A re-start got rid of the error message. I hope this helps.
