Hi, Efrain. I think you are being overly pessimistic. A lot would depend on
how many users choose Windows One Care in the coming year, after all the
competitiors become compatible with Vista. How much market share does WOC
have now anyway?

Hi Paul: I truly hope you are right.

Efrain, I finally installed WLOC 1.5 today on XP AFTER totally uninstalling
version 1.1 and Defender. Although the antispyware protecton may be totally
integrated with the AV in WLOC 1.5, there are apparently NO shields for start
up programs, etc. To test, I set WinPatrol and AVG AS (Ewido) to run at start
up and got no alert from One Care. I also installed LinkScanner Pro without
any evidence that One Care "cared," except that it automatically allowed
LinkScanner firewall permission to access the Internet. It looks like I'm
going to have to resort to 3rd party tools like WinPatrol to monitor software
behavior on my PC. That is a great pity, IMO. Is this the normal behavior
for the antispyware in WLOC 1.5, or have I have I missed something in the
install?

It just dawned on me that this WOC 1.5 version of antyspyware MIGHT be set to
alert only to known malware. I have not confirmed that, however, and there
is no way to tweak that setting.

Hi Paul:
I have a feeling that when I had Defender and WLOC 1.1 I had more control to
the the information and settings. For example: I could order Defender to do
only spyware scan, or WLOC 1.1 to exclude my entire external drive from the
virus scan. Not now with WLOC 1.5, and both scans are tied together. The
problem is that 1.1 will be updated to I dont know what. If 1.5 is their
final product, then I will keep only Defender and install my old Ad Aware and
Norton AV. What do you think?

Hi Efrain. I would have replied sooner but I just found out AOL is blocking
emails to me from Microsoft. PITA!!! I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet
about WLOC and Defender. For now, I'll try continue testing this beta WLOC
1.5 and see what develops. It's obviously a "work in progress" and I think
we both know now that there is no such thing as a "final" version of
anything. In the past, I had some problems using Defender and WLOC 1.1 -
twice on 2 different installations of WIndows I had my "turn off computer"
link disappear from my Welcome Screen. That only occurred while I was using
WLOC and Defender. I never did find out the cause, and I'm curious to see
what happens using this WLOC 1.5. I could always switch back to KIS 6.0, but
it's a PITA to configure and is not compatible with Defender. If things go
badly, maybe it's time for me to try AVG. I'll let you know if anything
drastic happens.

Paul:
Remember this morning posts on the Defender and WLOC ? Many new the correct
relation because they have read the beginning post under antivirus by Yoav
dated 1/10/07, and posted 10/12, 3 days ago. In any court of law that will be
called "entrapment". Also I had the same mistake in my long post since
October 29, and not received any advice.

Just a follow up about Defender and WLOC 1.5: I have been using WLOC 1.5 for
several days now, and it seems to be working well. In fact, I'm not having
some of the issues I had with the separate Defender installed. Because the
integrated version is configured by WLOC policy, I have no control over its
settings except off or on, but apparently it is running in the background and
performing scheduled scans without generating a the multitude of Event Viewer
entries I had grown used to.Because this version of Defender built into WLOC
1.5 cannot be "exited," I have the intuition that it might be hardened
against being disabled. Time will tell. Obviously Defender and WLOC are
both "works in progress," which is good, because both can improve over time.

Hi Paul:
My WLOC is still working to perfection. I dont know its there. The Event
Viewer don't have a error reports in any of the seven items.
Use this tool, but only the Clean-up part, and tell me if you like it.

I am begining to like 1.5 and miss my Defender,.....but....I'll have both
on my upcoming Vista Ultimate , LOL , ordered to J&R, express delivery. I
also ordered the new book Windows Vista Secrets by Livingston and Thurrott.

Hi Efrain,

I've used the Live Safety Scanner before, and I'm a little bit leary of the
registry cleaner part of "clean up." Overall, the tool seems OK, but I'm more
comfortable doing registry cleaning with jv16PowerTools. because I can see
and understand details better using its interface. I miss the Defender
software explorers and the ability to do a spyware scan in safe mode. There's
supposed to be some way to run a command line scan using WLOC, but I can't
figure it out. I just tried tonight and failed. I think the instructons that
I saw at the WLOC forum were not complete, and need to post back there for
clarification. Fortunately, I was just testing and did not actually need it.
Things are A OK here for the moment.
