Defender may not be working properly. When I look in history it shows me a
dozen programs that it allowed. If I click on the link for allowed programs,
the list is blank. I have even tried to go to tools and click on allowed not
to monitor, but the list is blank. All I see is the outline of the report.
It is auto allowing programs with potentially unwanted behavior, and I have
no way to block the programs. thanks for the help. Jerry

Check the wording at the "tools" menu level for the "allowed items"

This area will only show items that have been challenged by Windows Defender
either by real-time protection or a scan result, and which you have chosen
to allow--overriding Windows Defender's default recommendation.

I've got two such items--UltraVNC, and a test file.

Now--let's take a look at those history items. Pick one, and scroll way
down to the bottom of it. You should see "Category:"

Not Yet Classified.

These items are perfectly normal--Windows Defender is working as designed.
It is quite likely that these items are either drivers, or items related to
legitimate software installs--for example, the first one I have relates to
an installation of the Terminal Services Client--a legitimate, but unusual
(beta) bit of Microsoft code.

You can set options to be notified when these items are found--and that's
one way to get a better view of, say, an installation process for a new
applet--but for most users, being notified of these is going to be very
confusing, and probably result in blocking normal system activities.

The wording bears careful examination--these are items whose type or
location COULD BE (i.e. potentially) indicative of unwanted behavior.
However, it could just as well be something you are intentionally installing
and want on your system.

Take a look at the paths for some of the items--I suspect that you'll find
they are all related to software you are knowingly installing or updating at
the relevant times.

The opposite is possible of course, and you can have Defender notify you of
these items--but most users won't have the background knowledge to make the
right decision.

Just a little tip from most people to Microsoft and if you could please pass
it on.

How in the world does Microsoft and MS Developers expect the everyday
Jane/Joe to understand all that?
Do you know how many times I had to read what you wrote, to understand it in
layman's terms.

It seems, more and more software coming out of MS lately has
instructions/help files written for people that have to take a MS course
just to get thru the documentation.

First thing I learned when doing documentation and designing software, KISS
(Keep It Simple Stupid).

Please pass this on, in a nice tone.

That's why the default settings don't show people that information. Those
history items result from checking additional options beyond the default
settings.

I apologize for not explaining it as clearly as might be possible, but those
entries aren't shown by default--i.e. the average user should not see them.

I totally agree with you. I teach beginners and they would look at this in
WD and say "duh" No Way!
MS has to understand not everyone is an IT person- in fact most of the world
is not and the program needs to be user friendly for the majority not the
minority or no one will use it.
I understand it will be in Vista and Vista is going to be hard enough to
understand- now you put WD in the way it is now and you will have a
disaster. Most ppl will turn it off or let it run without even knowing it
is running and when it jumps up with malware will panic and prolly will just
shut it off instead of listening to the technical stuff it says because they
will not understand it.
I go through this everyday with my clients. and as i said in an earlier post
right now i would not recommend it to clients unless i was in their faces
24/7 which that i cannot do.
Microsoft has to listen to our advice here- aren't we beta testers? and make
it more user friendly and fix the problems we are finding before they
release it out to the public.

just my 2cents
robin :)
