I have downloaded Windows Defender 2 to my desktop.
When I try to install, the installation begins then fails:
"System Administrator has set policies to prevent this installation"
Running Windows XP SP2
I am logged in as administrator

No.
Just a notebook, part of a ms-network workgroup via wi-fi.
I have installed Defender on four other systems without difficulty. This is
the last one, and the only one to have this problem.............

Well, this is my wife's notebook so no changes have been made by her to
Policies.
NAV is installed, but the link concerned NAV uninstall problems.
Typing "gpedit.msc" gave me a "not found"
I even tried to disable NAV and Norton Security - no help.
Back to square one..:-(

Is this machine fully up to date with all critical patches? Is the Windows
Installer 3.1 installed? (this shows in the list in add or remove programs.)

Consider logging on in safe mode as administrator. That's the true
administrator on XP Home--it may well have no password.

I'm not sure what difference that would make, nor whether it is possible to
do the Windows Defender install in safe mode--but it wouldn't take too long
to try.

Mystery Solved!
I tried to install using the file I downloaded earlier on another PC - and
it installed flawlessly.
The file that would not install was downloaded last night, and it took an
unusually long time to start the download - must have been corrupted.
BTW, both were downloaded from the MS Windows Defender site.
Thanks for your assistance.

Glad you got it solved. That kind of corruption is sometimes handled by
having an additional wrapper around the .MSI file I think--not sure why they
chose to distribute it in this way.
