Defender 0X80070422

The message reads:

Windows Defender was unable to complete the update: 0x8007042. The service
cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enable
devices associated with it.

I get that message when I click on the update button???

I checked the settings and I have all checked under auto protect.

Any help?
 
For me this happened because I had set the "Automatic Updates" service to
disabled. re-enable it temporarily and it worked fine.
 
Updates within Windows Defender--either user triggered (help, about, check
for updates) or automatic (check box for update signatures before scanning)
use Automatic Updates.

You can also update manually via WindowsUpdate or MicrosoftUpdate.
