default video card disabled

darnit, I disabled the default video card instead of deleting it (in the
hopes that windowsXP would attempt to re-find the device), but now after boot
and the windows splash screen, it goes to black screen (monitor still active)
cuz it doesn't want to see the video card. derrr, my dumb mistake.

In Win98 there used to be a setting in .ini file that you could turn video
cards back on...how do I do this in XP?

I faced he same problem. Disabled default video card by mistake. Windows goes as it used to go - but the monitor is black.

Tried to install another card - but the screen remains black.

Boot into Safe Mode, which loads generic VGA video drivers, (Press the F8 key a couple of
times on Boot, but before Windows logo, then select Safe Mode. If you see the Windows
logo then you've gone too far, and try again). Once in Safe Mode go back to Device
Manager, and Enable your display adapter.
