I know this is probably the most basic thing for a
windows domains, but I am not sure how to setup a default
user profile with default shortcuts and network mapping
for new users and force old user to have to have the same
setup upon the next startup. I would like to setup a
standard DESKTOP layout for all user, but I want them to
be stored in a user folder on the server. The reason I
would like to do this is because once the user logons
with this new setting for users I would like to allow
them to customize it to their needs, but I want the most
commomly used network folder to have the shortcuts appair
on the the users desktop. Please help
..

Hello Mike_B

You can create a folder in the NETLOGON share named "Default User" and there
place a standard profile

The Default User Profile will be inherit to all new users, and the profile
will be copied from the server to the users own profile.

Normaly this always happens but on a local level, from the Default User
profile in Documents and Settings, or in Profiles at pre Windows2000 and
upgraded systems.

Default User Profile will work in this way, if there is no existing profile,
the Default User Profile is cloned to the users profile and is used a logon,
if a profile exist, i will be copied from the users profile path as
nomranly.

if this not is what you want, re-write and i will try to found another
solution for you

That is what I am looking for. Will this rollout to users that exist on the
domain already.

if a profile exist, i will be copied from the users profile path as
nomranly. with other works, if your existing user has a existing profile,
the Default User Profile will not be applied to here existing profile.

We can't say this effects ONLY new users becuse thats not true. it effects
users with none existing profiles or empty profiles

I have a related question. The setup of our network/domain was done long
before I came on board. I would like to update the "default User" profile to
reflect the strategy we currently use. Currently, when I create a new user
and then logon for the first time, I have to spend about 20 minutes
customizing the desktop. This includes

- Browser settings
- Outlook setup and configuration
- placing and positioning shortcuts on the desktop
- defaults for Word Perfect Suite apps
- default printer

I'd like to know how to change the default configuration so as to minimize
the customizations... TIA..........

Hello Hank Arnold

Yeah iknow, and i think all other administrators know that too. if there is
a way? Yes, there is always a way

- Browser settings <-- Set that Option in s Group Policy
- Outlook setup and configuration <-- Use Office Resource Kit Tools
- placing and positioning shortcuts on the desktop <-- Use the Default User
Profile in NETLOGON
- defaults for Word Perfect Suite apps <-- if the application save data to
the Application Data folder, redirect that folder with folder redirection
anf Group Policy
- default printer --> simple login script to connect and set default
printer.

it´s relly easy to save time if you know the ways to take.

you can also create an unattend installation with Setup Manager comes with
Windows Support Tools in the file Deploy.cab, there you can customize all
settings of an windows installation, and yes even the serial key. use
unattend setup with and ris image (Remote Installation Service) and you only
need to boot up on network. with other words, Press F12 type the admin pass
and the installation starts automatical and you NEEVER ned to input
anything, go for lunch and when you come back 20 new computers up and
running with the settings you and your orgnization want and need.

This is all very useful information, but I have a few
questions about your comments. Where can I find the
Office Resource Kit Tools? When you say Browser
settings, what browser are you refering to. Windows
Explorer, Internet Explorer, or some other browser.

Mike,

The Office Resource Kit is available from:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/prodtechn
ol/office/office2000/downloads/o2ktools.asp

You can type in "Office Resource Kit" in the search field at Microsoft.com
to find this, as well as a lot of additional information on the subject.

The browser settings that are being referred to are the Internet Explorer
web browser settings, which can be configured through group policy. Check
out the following link for more information. Again, you can use the search
functionality at microsoft.com or browse through technet or the KB to find a
plethora of information on this subject.
