When trying to get rid of Searchmiracle, I have inadvertently deleted a
registry entry for Internet Explorer; HijackThis tells me that "Default
URLSearchHook is missing".

How do I restore it?

And suddenly, each time my computer starts up, it tells me that "One of your
disks needs to be checked for consistency" - can the missing Default
URLSearchHook be the reason for this?

Try adding this String Value to this part of the registry:

START > RUN > regedit

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\URLSearchHooks:

Name Type
Data
[ab](Default) REG_SZ
(value not set)
[ab]{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} REG_SZ

To add the missing entry -

After navigating to and opening URLSearchHooks -

In the right hand pane (the value pane) -

Right click in a blank area -

Hover on "New" and then click on "String value" -

Type in exactly {CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} and click OK -

(Now should look as above)

Close Registry Editor

Restart

Test search from IE6 Address Bar
