When I open up internet explorer lately, it goes to my default site, but the
URL I want, such as www.google.com is preceded by an
allaboutsearching.com/passthrough... prefix. Though there may be an
unrelated reason, I also note that I get some features at the top and the
bottom of the screen that obscure some of the google screen. Also, it seems
to be crashing more often. I tried resetting the default URL without the
prefix, but it keeps coming back. I tried Yahoo as an alterante default
site choice, but it seemed to do the same thing to that too.

Can someone tell me exactly what this is and how to get rid of it?

Thanks,
Grace

First eliminate any scumware.
See

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:

Alternative download pages for Ad-Aware, Spybot, HijackThis and CWShredder
may be found on this page:

If trying everything at that site does not fix the problem please post back
in the same thread.

Thanks, I have just run ad-aware and it looks like that may have fixed it.
I notice that the tutorial you guys have suggests ad-aware is for novies and
spybot is for experienced users. I am not sure I am the latter and wonder
if I will likely get confused with SpyBot. Even with ad-aware, all that I
can fathom to do is remove everything - fortunately, that seems not to have
hurt anything so far. What do you think about a novice trying spybot?

Thanks,
Grace

You can run Spybot S & D and it will list everything it finds and you can
choose what to fix. I don't know of anyone who got in trouble by just
fixing what it marks in red.

But you might prefer running HijackThis, saving the log and posting it to
one of these sites:
