When I write a new email, I get automatically my default address ("manic") in
my "from" box but when I reply to a message sent to my default address
("manic") the "from" box shows my secondary address ("talktalk"). How do I
get the "from" box in reply to show my default address of "manic"?

I don't know how to make the computer doing it automatically.
But manually, just click the pointer at the far right of the From box, and
select.

When replying Windows Mail uses the identity of the account that
downloaded the message to determine which 'From' address to use.
It might help to monitor the account tag associated with a message:
Right-click on any column header in the message list pane
(such as 'Subject'), select Columns, then add the account column.

I have the same problem. Windows Mail seems to occasionally use one of my
other accounts to send "From" when I am replying to a message received on my
main account. I filled in the "Reply address:" field on all of my account
Properties but it made no difference. I can't figure any logic to when it
does it, it seems random. I have had to disable the secondary account from
sending, so that I get an error when it happens, several times a day. It
looks like a bug to me.

btw, the help system on WM is not so much poor as missing. That's why I
have come to this place for answers.

So have you added the Account column, as I recommended below?
You may find that the message is either missing its account data or
has the wrong account data. Depending on which situation it is, I can
make further recommendations.
Make sure your antivirus is not configured to scan emails.

The Account column shows the seconday account for the incoming emails which
cause problems.

How are these incoming emails acquiring the secondary account? They are
sent to my main address, and it seems like I have other emails from the same
authors which have correctly arrived on my main account.

For antivirus I have free AVG. It is set to Check incoming Email. Are you
proposing that I turn this off? Won't this leave me exposed?

Thanks for help so far.

I have located the problem, I think. I had set up the secondary account';s
Properties/Servers/Incoming Mail server/E-mail username & password as the
primary name, rather than the econdary. Now it appears to work. The Replay
address on the General tab also appears to work correctly.

The only thing I don't understand is why only the occasional random email
was picked up this way, so that it has taken 3 months for me to find the
problem significant enough to go looking for a cure. Weird?

Anyway, problem solved, user error.
Thanks for help.

You're very welcome. Glad to hear that adding the Account column helped
to clear up the mystery.

As for the sporadic nature of the problem, that can be explained as follows:
Both accounts had the same username, so they were checking the same
mailbox on the server. Whichever account managed to pull down a new
incoming email first would then make it unavailable to the other account.
Most of the time your primary account completed its mail check first, so
it was downloading most of your incoming emails.

I think Gary usually ensures people that scanning of email by an antivirus
program is unnecessary. He can refer you to an article that explains that. I
am embarrassed to admit that I have not read the article, but I assume it
says that AV software is able to detect malicious software in other ways; in
the same manner that it uses for detecting malicious software from other
sources. The email scanning is redundant and is likely to be a problem.
Also, Internet Explorer has built-in security and Windows Mail uses IE to
show messages. So Windows Mail has the same security protection as IE,
without the need for special scanning of the messages.

I tried disabling AVG mail checking as suggested below, but it didn't help in
my case. What I did to fix the problem was to delete and recreate, within
Windows Mail, the secondary account in question.

I seem to have sorted the problem on mine. My default address was second in
the accounts list and emails received were all coming to the first in the
list as they are different aliases of the same account. So when I replied it
was using the first in the list as that is the one that picked them up. If
you click on properties of the accounts the first box lets you choose a name
to refer the account to. This does not change the displayed name which is in
the second box. The default address needs to be alphabetically first in the
list. I just renamed the first in the list "work" and it sent it to the
bottom of the accounts list making my default first. My default now picks up
all emails.

You still get the problem if you want to reply from one of your other
accounts as everything comes to the default now. You just don't have to
change it so often. Hope this works for others too.

WM does this because it only has the one Inbox, so all is controlled by /
deferred to the "default". When replying, you need only click the "From"
box arrow (at end of field) to select the address from which you want the
email sent.

I know you can press the "from" box and change it but that is no good when
you forget to do it and you end up sending an important email with a silly
alias. The whole point of having a "default" is so you can use it as the
default. I think that is what the main gripe is with everyone. Hopefully my
fix works for them too.
