Default.rdp? Can I get a few opinions...

Hello, I'm using a WinXP-pro PC, and tried out a Windows remote desktop
connection...actually, used 2 PC's in the same office here, and allowed one
to sign on to the other, see the desktop, open/use programs, browse files,
copied some files from one PC to the other, added/deleted some files, etc.

Most files I looked at (and/or changed, just to test it out), are in the My
Documents folder.

Windows seemed to put a small 2KB "Default.rdp" file in My Documents, I
think it might be in several folders, on both PC's, unsure.

Was wondering if could ask for some answers (even if answers/opinions vary)
in layman's terms, not Microsoft multi-page tech-note tech terms. Here are
questions, Thanks...

1) CAUSE. Exactly what causes this file to be generated? That is, what are
the conditions whereby Windows drops this file into a folder.

2) WHERE/WHY. Does it deposit the file on both PC's...how does it know
where (what folder) to put the file, and when/why to put it on the
controlling PC or controlled PC.

3) ACTIVE or ONE-TIME. Does this Default.rdp file ever change at all? What
causes it to update?

4) DELETE? Most importantly, can I delete it (don't like clutter)... will
it just add it back if it's ever needed again?

5) TECHNICALLY CORRECT. Minor thing... Windows doesn't seem to use terms..
controlling PC or controlled PC. What are official terms... like host?
client? etc.?

Thanks,
George

The default.rdp file is created when you run the Remote Desktop [RDC] client
on your PC. It is not created on the remote PC, ie. the PC you are
accessing/controlling. You can change the contents of the file by opening
the RDC client on your PC and selecting "Options". Yes you can delete the
file but it will be recreated when you run the RDC client again. You can
also create custom .rdp files for each RDC host and save them. I do that for
the different hosts I connect to.

RDC host = the remote PC your accessing/controlling with RDC
RDC client = your PC.

This file is saved configuration of the Remote desktop
utility. It creates it where it runs, i.e. on the "controlling" side.

This file contains the remote machine name, but not the password (for
security reasons). You can delete it if you want, and next time specify
all connection parameters manually.
You can save connection parameters for a session to
another .rdp file if you want.
Clicking on a .rdp file will start the remote
desktop with parameters from the file.
If you just run the Remote desktop from Start menu, it opens default.rdp.

Hope this helps,

1) Remote Desktop creates this be default

2) It is create on the PC that starts the remote desktop request. The
"host" destination PC does not require this for the remote request
will be using a defined user account.

3) Default will check is you set it as default in the option or save
it as that name.

4) You can delete it but it will be recreate everytime. It is easier
to leave it since it take little room

5) Remote Desktop was originally known as Terminal Services and was
designed for a server.
