Running Win XP Pro and am having a problem which is
occurring more frequently. When I log on as my user, XP
ends up loading the default profile for a new user and
starts asking me to configure certain things that new
user would need to configure(such as mouse and some sound
configurations).

This typically happens when I boot up my computer after
having it shut off. This would only happen once in
while, but is becoming more frequent now.

I have to do a restart and then logging in will use the
proper profile for the user I select to log in as.

Any ideas anyone(And yes I visit Windows Update
regularly)?

The registry data for your profile is starting to "go bad." XP deems it
unreliable and loads a default profile instead. Log on with an
administrator account. Create a new every day account for yourself. Do not
copy the old profile over the new profile as this would most likely
perpetuate the account's corrupted registry data. Instead, reset your
preferences manually and copy your data files over to the new account
folders.
