I want to locate my default Outlook 2000 *.pst file (that
is, the one that includes Outlook Today, etc.) in a
folder of my choice, where it's easy to access and back
up with other data files.

There used to be an easy way to do this with Outlook 98,
but I haven't been able to find the corresponding trick
for Outlook 2000. Can anyone help me out with this?

Thanks ...

just move it. When you next start Outlook it will complain that it
can't find the pst file, and just navigate to the location where you
moved it to.

If all you're looking to do is to ease the backup of your
PST file, I suggest you use the "PST Backup" tool
(pfbackup.exe) available for free download on the
Microsoft Office website.

Aside from that, I suggest that you make a copy of your
current PST and put it in the location of your choice.
Then, go to Tools / Services / Delivery Tab and choose
the new PST as your delivery store. You should remove
the old one. After you reboot Outlook, your profile
should be working off of your new PST. NOTE: Always
create a backup of your PST before working with them in
the file system. User errors can and do occur.

Charles -

Thanks for your response and suggestions - unfortunately,
Outlool 2000 doesn't seem to have
the "Tools/Services/Delivery" tab under Tools - I suspect
you may be looking at a later (earlier?) version of
Outlook. In fact, it's not obvious to me that that
there's any simple way to choose the default file
location. Perhaps Uncle Bill has hidden it in another
location ... any other ideas?

Seems to me the last time I tried this, I went through
some convoluted process of creating a new file and then
magically (I don't remember how) associating it with the
Outlook Today interface. Following all this, I copied the
email, calendar, and contacts folders to the new file.
Not only inelegent, but irreproducible since I don't
recall the sequence exactly. Outlook 98 had a much
simpler method that seemed closer to the one you
recommend.

Actually, I was looking at Outlook 2000 SP3. There is
no "Services" menu item under Tools? (Make sure you have
your inbox selected, as menus change depending on current
selection)

Alternatively, you can find this dialog in your Windows
Control Panel under "Mail".

Hope this helps!

He may be using Outlook 2000 in Internet Mail Only mode...in which case
he'd have "Accounts" under the Tools menu rather than "Services", and of
course he wouldn't be able to get to Services from the Mail applet in
Control Panel either.
