Default OS!

Arpan

I have both Windows 2000 Professional (in C:\) & Windows XP Professional (in D:\) installed in my system & WinXP is labelled as the default OS i.e. whenever I switch on my machine, I am showed the 2 OSs - WinXP & Win2K - to choose from but if I don't choose either of them, WinXP gets loaded automatically after 30 seconds.

What I would like to know is is there any way by which I can make Win2K as the default OS i.e. even if none of the 2 OSs are chosen during start-up, Win2K will get loaded automatically instead of WinXP?

Thanks,

Arpan

Boot into 2K

Right click the my computer Icon
Choose Properties
Choose Advanced
Choose Start up and Recovery
Set the default and the time to display list of OS as required

This will rewrite the Boot.ini file which resides as a hidden file on the C
drive

In Windows goto System Properties, Advanced then Settings for Startup and
Recovery. Click the drop down for Default operating system and choose the
one you want.

• Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click System.
• On the Advanced tab, under Startup and Recovery, click Settings.
• Under System startup, in the Default operating system list, click the
operating system that you want to start when you turn on or restart your
computer.
• Select the Display list of operating systems for check box, and then
type the number of seconds for which you want the list displayed before
the default operating system starts automatically.

Or edit the boot.ini file and change default= line to point to w2k.

Example of a boot.ini file:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Windows 2000 Server" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(1)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT="Windows XP Professional"
/fastdetect

In this example W2K Server is default loaded after 30 seconds. To have
XP load instead you would change the default= line to:
multi(0)disk(1)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT

Either use a text editor, such as NotePad, to manually edit
C:\Boot.ini to select a new default OS, or, from within either Win2K or
WinXP, right-click My Computer > Properties > Advanced > Startup and
Recovery, Settings > Default operating system.

Thanks all of your for your input. Another petty doubt - I find that the OSs listed in the "Startup and Recovery" dialog box are followed by "/fastdetect" which, if I am not mistaken, is self-explanatory but what's the need of "/fastdetect" when the list doesn't have any option with "/slowdetect" (atleast my system doesn't have any such option)?

Also can more than 2 Windows-based OSs be installed in one machine or is there a limit to it?

Last but not the least, here's wishing you all a HAPPY & PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR :)

Thanks once again to all of you,

Regards,

Arpan
