Hi

Can anyone explain me whether it is possible to have per-user default mail
clients? At my home PC my wife prefers to use Outlook Express while I prefer
Outlook.

As far as I can see changes to Tools -> Internet Options -> Programs are a
machine-wide setting (stored within HKLM/Software/Clients).

Thanks in advance
Lars

Lars,

You said it correct. The settings are applied to HKLM and this is not possible without a third-party tool. But, you can configure the start menu mail client to per-user settings.

XP allows you register an Internet Browser or E-mail Client With the Windows XP Start Menu on Per-User basis:

As for certain file associations, you can set it per-user by tweaking the registry. Mail me and let's work on it.

Hi Ramish

Thanks for your reply.

I know I can pin Outlook Express to the Start menu for my wife and Outlook
for myself. The nuisance is when clicking on a mailto: link on e.g. a web
page - either I or my wife is starting a wrong e-mail clientJ.

I just don't understand the rationale for having these settings stored under
HKLM. For me it appears as a design error (should invalidate Explorer for
obtaining the Windows XP logo J). Or is there an explanation I just can't
see?

Best regards

Lars

Lars,

You're correct. It should be per-user customizable. I tried per-user mailto: with some registry modifications and did not work as I expected. Not sure if a startup-script or application can help [changing the registry values each time while logging on].

Let's hope for this feature in future release of Windows OS.

I tried per-user mailto: with some registry modifications
and did not work as I expected.

Ramesh,

RegMon shows that there is an OpenKey attempt for

HKCU\SOFTWARE\Classes\PROTOCOLS\Handler\mailto

Did you try to clone the HKCR node there?

Others may be needed too.

FWIW the RegMon filter I used was:
Include: Mailto
Highlight: NOTFOUND

Robert Aldwinckle

In WinXP, it queries HKCU\mailto

As i tried it already, cloning the mailto does not work.
