does anyone know if you can change the default directory
that is opened when you want to open a file?

for example, if you open word and then click file->open,
it will automatically go to the my documents folder
unless you have already opened a file from a different
location. I would like to change the folder that it
automatically opens to.

thanks-

Chris,

For Word 2000:

Open Word 2000, Tools > Options > Filelocations.
Change the Documents location

-or in the registry directly-

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Word\Options]
"DOC-PATH"

You either change that preference in Word (Tools-Options-File
Locations) - this will affect ONLY Word.

Or you can actually point the My Documents to a particular location,
and that will affect any application that defaults to the My Documents
location.

thanks, is there a way to change it just once for all programs?

Not that I know of. However, what you may want to do is customize the
Places Bar. That is the vertical button bar at the left-hand side in the
Open and Save [As] dialog boxes. By default it has five buttons and if you
seldom use some of those folders [such as My Network Places] the following
explains how to change the buttons to more frequently used folders:

For customizing the My Places Bar for Microsoft Office see the following

box that is used with Notepad, WordPad, Internet Explorer, etc., see:
