Default Line

When I try to add a signature line and date line to the
bottom of a letter (using Underline) it goes the whole
way across the page. How can I change this?

Either
* immediately after the line characters turn into a cross-page line, hit
Undo (Edit > Undo or Ctrl+Z); or
* turn off automatic borderlines permanently from Tools > AutoCorrect
Options > AutoFormat as You Type > [ ] Border Lines.
