Is there any way to change this at the time of install? This is Win2K Pro,
not server. Or do i just change the directory name after install is
complete?

Thanks,
Scott

What are you talking about - c:\program files\ ?

If it is the above, TweakUI (control panel applet) has the ability to change this default to
something other than c:\program files\ such as d:\program files\

As long as \winnt directory exists before you run setup, then you'll be
prompted to overwrite or choose another location.

I am trying to do an install of Windows 2000 Professional workstation to
make it as secure as possible and one of the tips for Windows NT was to
change the directory that Windows installs to (c:\winnt) to something else
to foil automated or standard hacks. So there is no way to change this at
install time, unless it already exists on the system? Could I then wipe out
the original c:\winnt directory without reprecussions?

Thanks,
Scott

Yes, absolutely. Simply create the directory \winnt before hand, then
install Windows 2000. When prompted, you can install to \mywindir or
whatever. After the install you can delete the \winnt directory.

Changing the directory name to something other than 'c:\winnt' is NOT a security setting.
All a user has to do is use the %windir% or %SYSTEMROOT% environmental variables and they
will STILL get there since those variables deliberately point tyo the root Win32 directory.

You will gain much greater security aspects by just renaming the 'administrator' account to
something different.

If you don't believe me, do a search for settings for "C2 Security" level.
