Morning David,
You were right to start with the Master Slide placeholder text boxes. They
control a lot of the text used in PowerPoint. Did you remember to re-apply
the master layout to the slides? Open the task pane, select the slides you
want the formatting to be used for, select the master layout you want to use
and select Re-apply from the pulldown menu.
You may also want to try this.
1) Create a text box
2) Format it the way you want it (font size color etc.)
3) With the box selected, click thru the following sequence
Format | Text Box ... | {checkbox} Default for new objects
4) Ok out of there
Between these two, you should be good to go.
