When I first installed XP on my home built PC, I loaded a program that
continuously caused problems and it froze up to the point my PC was
unusable. I did not know about XP system restore at the time. I did not
have a lot of stuff loaded on the hard drive yet so I reinstalled XP I
think using reformat. It has been awhile. Anyway I reloaded XP and now I
have a nightmare file folder structure with quadruplication of 4 user
names plus 4 user namers.pcname and administrator X4. I want to move
files around using Windows Explore so that when I go to "My Documents"
from the Start menu and elsewhere, I go to that "My Document' folder of
each user name and not "usernamer.pcname". In otherwords I want to try
to clean up all my files to clean up to default XP file structure. Where
can I find info on the XP default structure so I can do some
housecleaning.
Default structure varies slightly but basical it is: Administrator, All
Users, Default User, Local Service, Network Service, <individual user
accounts).
When you reinstalled, you did not format as the folders for the older
accounts were retained. New folders were created and to differentiate them
from the originals, various characters were tagged onto the default folder
names. Example: The folder username.pcname that you mentioned is one of the
newer folders.
Figure out which folders are the current ones. They will have the most
recent date. You can double check a few by logging on to an account and
then typing %userprofile% in the Start> Run box. Windows Explorer will open
to the working folder for the user that is currently logged on.
Go through the old folders and grab whatever items you want to keep. Then
use Control Panel> Users to delete the extra accounts. If they are not
shown there, use System Properties> Advanced> User Profiles> Settings and
delete them from there.
